We recently went on a camping trip to Niagara Falls, NY! This place has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. Did you know that Niagara Falls is made up of three waterfalls? I am embarrassed to say that I did NOT know that! Horseshoe Falls, also known as the Canadian Falls, is the largest and lies on the border of Canada and the US. The two smaller falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls both plummet within the United States. All together, the falls have the highest flow rate of any other waterfall in North America! Amazing what you can learn from exploring, am I right? This place is definitely worth a visit, and you CAN experience it in 2 days!
Things to do in Niagara Falls, NY
Maid of the Mist
The Maid of the Mist is a great way to see the falls up close and personal! We got to Niagara Falls on a Friday morning, so we thought it would be a good idea to experience the Maid of the Mist before all the weekend traffic. I’m guessing that is normally a good call, however school had just started back (we were there late August) and many of their employees are college students. So due to being short staffed, they were only sending one boat for tours. Normally tours depart every 15 minutes, and the tour itself lasts about 20 minutes. We waited in that hot as you know what line for an hour and a half…with our 3 and 1 year old. Fun times!
That aside, the experience was fantastic and totally worth it. You WILL get wet, but on a hot day it is more than refreshing! Our boys loved every minute, and I’m so glad we made those memories!
First Time Tips
- Don’t put your provided poncho on until the boat sets sail. No sense in getting hotter than you already are!
- Strollers are allowed, but not recommended on the boat (they may get very wet). We used our small umbrella stroller while we waited in line. There is a place to store the stroller before you get on the boat.
- If you can, try to get a spot in the front left of the boat. You will get to see all three waterfalls (American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls) which combined make up Niagara Falls, in all of its glory. The boat does circle around, so you are able to experience the falls from all aspects.
- Take water with you – we did not have any with us and seriously wished we had some. I don’t believe food/drink is allowed on the boat itself, but there are trash cans before you board.
Niagara Falls State Park
Another great way to experience the falls is by exploring Niagara Falls State Park. It’s the oldest state park in the US (how cool is that?)! We spent our second day here, walking around taking in the views. There are four parking lots, each costing $10 to park. Maps are located throughout the park if you decide to walk (like we did), or take the trolly tour! Expect to spend at least two hours here. Wear your walking shoes, pack lots of water, and take in all the views! Niagara Falls state park offers attractions, hiking, and dining options, or pack a picnic of your own! Here are some of the popular spots within or near the park:
- Niagara Falls State Park Visitor Center
- Maid of the Mist
- Cave of the Winds
- Observation Tower
- Prospect Point
- Terrapin Point
- Three Sisters Islands
- Luna Island
- Discovery Center and Aquarium
- Niagara Scenic Trolley
Old Falls Street USA
Old Falls Street USA is an exciting three-block district that serves as a “Community Welcome Center!” There are TONS of food trucks with tables and chairs for dining and relaxing, as well as restaurants to dine in. Check out their website as there are seasonal festivals, concerts, and family friendly activities! I’m super sad to say we missed out on their Octoberfest…Oh how I love me some German beer!

We were SO impressed with our campground, Branches of Niagara Campground Resort! The camp sites were spacious, and each offered either water and electric, full hook-up, or premium patios.
