Finches in Flight

Phoenix, AZ with Kids

Traveling with kids is not always easy, especially if you’re flying across the country like we did! Adding in a time change to the mix can also make for an interesting experience. But it CAN be done! We flew to Phoenix, AZ this past October and made memories we will cherish forever. Phoenix, AZ is such a family friendly place with so much to see, do, and explore!

Whenever we travel to a new place, we do TONS of research. Where to stay, what to do, and where to eat. Since having kids, our priorities have changed a bit. Not that we as adults don’t get to have our fun anymore, we just tend to revolve our plans around them. Instead of just finding all the cool hot spots, we now also consider where parks and zoos are located. Does this sound familiar to you? Balance – happy kiddos, happy parents. Where to Stay in Phoenix

Sharing a hotel room with toddlers is not the most enjoyable, so we decided to stay at a VRBO! We found a great deal in the Glendale, AZ area (very close to the airport) and were super close to almost everything we wanted to do! What we love most about staying at a VRBO is having more separation of space, a full-size kitchen, and a homier feel. Our oldest son had his own room, and our youngest stayed in a pack n play (provided by the host) in our master closet! Our rental included access to their facilities exercise room, pool(s) and spa! By not staying at a hotel, you’re able to eat more meals in, and not feel so bloated during your trip (and you save money too)!

Best Things to do With Kids in Phoenix

Papago Park

We stayed almost across the street from Papago Park. Here you can hike, visit the Botanical Gardens, or just take in the beautiful desert landscape views. The park has a map of several hiking routes, including a 5k fitness loop. We saw several locals walking their dogs and mountain biking at Papago Park. It’s such a beautiful place, you need to check it out!

One thing you absolutely need to put on your to do list is to stop and see the Hole-in-the-Rock! It’s a natural geological formation that offers incredible views. It’s a short tenth of a mile hike that is super kid friendly. Our three-year-old walked this one himself. Pack yourself a picnic lunch and take in the views while you relax in this sandstone butte.

McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

The McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park is a 30-acre park located, just a short drive from Phoenix, in Scottsdale, AZ. Here you can let the kids play on their incredible (and shaded) playground and explore their unique museums and shops when you need a break from the sun. Take a ride on the Paradise & Pacific Railroad and spoil the kids even more and take them on the vintage carousel. There is no admission fee to the park, but the rides do cost $3 each (children 2 and under are free). The railroad park was a highlight of our trip. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here!

Phoenix Zoo

If you are in Phoenix, you NEED to visit the Phoenix Zoo! The Phoenix Zoo is the largest privately owned, non-profit zoo in the US! It’s divided into four main themes: the Arizona Trail, the Africa Trail, the Tropics Trail, and the Discovery/Children’s Trail. They have more than 3,000 animals on exhibit, animal encounters, a carousel, playgrounds, and water play areas (make sure to bring swimsuits for the kids)! Because the zoo is so big, expect to spend about 3 hours here! We were so impressed with the Phoenix Zoo – definitely worth a visit!

Tip: The Phoenix Zoo participates in the Reciprocal Program. If you have a zoo membership at your local zoo, present your membership card and photo ID and receive 50% off admission!

Sea Life Arizona Aquarium

Sea Life Arizona Aquarium is another great place to take the kiddos. Here you will experience Arizona’s only 360 degree ocean tunnel! Other exhibits include their Bay of Rays, Interactive Touchpool, Temple of the Seahorse and more! There is even a fun indoor play area for the kids at the end of the tour! It’s located right inside of the mall (next to LEGOLAND), and you’re able to use your tickets for same day re-entry! We walked through the aquarium twice our boys enjoyed it so much!

Arcadia Park

Want to let the kids burn off some energy for free? Arcadia Park is a great place for that! Located at the bottom of Camelback Mountain, it’s a beautiful, clean park with a great playground swing set, and field to run around or relax. You don’t always have to spend money for entertainment – sometimes it’s nice to just enjoy a new playground!

Where to Eat in Phoenix

Since we had a full-size kitchen in our VRBO, we chose to eat in (or get takeout) for most of our meals. BUT… we did enjoy one breakfast out and it’s definitely worth mentioning – Snooze!! This place is super cute – kind of a midcentury modern feel – and the food is incredible! I ordered the pancake flight (Pineapple Upside Down, Blueberry Danish & Pumpkin Pecan Pie pancakes) with a side of bacon…mmm!!! My husband had their 3 egg omelet with chorizo, ham, and peppers! Our kids are picky eaters, so they both just nibbled off of our plates. It’s worth it, trust me…just look at these pictures!
