RV Converter Replacement

Nothing is worse than getting to a campsite, or leaving a site, and having mechanical issues. From time to time, we had to use a jumpstart battery to have enough power to work the slide out and operate the tongue jack. It left us wondering why our battery was not holding a good charge. During the winter I kept the battery on a tender, but only occasionally during camping season. After going through two batteries (one luckily under warranty) and doing some troubleshooting, I believe the culprit was the RV converter and I knew it needed to be replaced.

I’ll be honest and make no claim to be an electrician, but thought for a couple hundred bucks, it was worth the investment to replace my RV converter. I decided to go with a newer design than what we had, and you can find that link here. There is also a more advanced version which allows for you to switch between deep cell and lithium batteries. For our camping needs, I’m not able to justify the cost of a lithium battery since we don’t do any Boondocking and always have shore power. However, if I was going to Boondock I probably would have paid for the upgraded lithium RV converter.

I do consider myself a pretty good DIYer and do a ton of research before tackling projects. Honestly, this converter replacement was extremely easy. While this was a direct wire for wire swap, I still took a before picture and short video showing the wire connection, for my reference. Instead of my own video, I’ll post the link to the manufacturers’ website. The directions are straightforward  with the exact same connections.

Update: We have gone the whole year without having battery, slide, or tongue jack issues. One thing I did notice, if my wife was putting the slide out while I was adjusting the tongue jack, the breaker would trip. Just FYI, this causes too much amperage draw and you should NOT do this at the same time.
